I set out on my amazing journey of recovery when I embarked on a rehabilitation treatment program for my addiction to alcohol and drugs in 2006. Since then, I have discovered that my misuse of substances was directly related to the trauma of being sexual abused throughout my childhood.
Numerous research studies confirm the link between traumatic experiences in childhood and addictive behaviours in adulthood. One of the most notable is the original study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) by Felitti and colleagues (1998).
My work and continued learning is dedicated to gaining more knowledge and understanding around how we, as survivors, live with the distressing and dysfunctional impact of unresolved traumas from our childhoods. 'Grace Saved A Wretch Like Me' is my first book and it is a story of Hope. In it I share my personal experiences of how I struggled & survived and how with the loving support of my family I learned to live my life differently and went on to achieve what was once beyond my fortuity and freedom.
